SURVIVING CANAL HISTORY: The Matton Shipyard on the Hudson River in Cohoes, as it appears today. It produced 345 vessels-- including canal boats, oil barges, tugs and Navy sub-chasers-- between 1916 and 1982, with the changeover from wood to steel occurring in 1938. SCOW is working on a proposal that would bring this state owned plot back to life as a shipyard again.
