Canal System Promotion

Is Topic of Public Forum

Tourism potential and promotional efforts for the state canal system is the focus of a public form in Syracuse on February 28th, hosted by the State Council on Waterways.

Investments in the hundreds of millions of dollars by the State and Federal governments over the past two decades have renewed the canal's infrastructure and developed a vast recreational resource.  Effective promotion is essential to support the many marine related businesses along the Erie, Oswego, Cayuga & Seneca and Champlain Canals, and to help the waterway reach its tourism potential.  This is a critical need now, because although there are more visitors who enjoy the canals from the shore, boat traffic at the locks is slow in recovering from a significant decline experienced since the early 1990's.

The SCOW forum will feature speakers who will address the present state of canal use and promotion, and ideas for future public and private sector initiatives will be solicited.  It will be held on Thursday, February 28th at 2:00 PM at the Wyndam Hotel, 6301 Route 298 (Carrier Circle) in Syracuse (315-432-0200).

The State Council on Waterways, a not-for-profit advocacy group formed in 1986, is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing New York's waterways.  This program is part of a series of informational forums on important waterway issues sponsored by SCOW statewide.  They are free and open to the public.
